Fuels is any material that can be burned to release thermal energy. All major fuels consist primarily of carbon and hydrogen. They are called hydrocarbon fuels and are denoted by the general formula CnHn. Hydrocarbon fuels exist in all phases like coal(s) , gasoline (l) and natural gas (g).
Coal is the most abundant fuel and it contains, besides carbon , varying amounts of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen , Sulphur , moisture and ash.
Liquid hydrocarbon fuels are mixtures of many different hydrocarbons , but they are considered to be single hydrocarbon, like octane C8H18 for gasoline and Dodecane, C12H26 for diesel.
Natural gas is produced for gas wells or oil wells rich in natural gas , is composed of methane and small amounts of ethane, propane, CO2, H2O, vapor , Hydrogen H2S and nitrogen
Combustion is a chemical reaction between fuel and oxygen which proceeds at a fast rate with the release of energy in form of heat.
eg, In the combustion of methane,
CH4 + 2O2 =======> CO2 + 2H2O
