A block diagram of fuel supply system is S.I Engine. This system supplies required fuel to the engine. The system consists of a fuel storage tank, fuel pump, filter, carburetor and inlet manifold.
There are two different methods of fuel supply system. They are
i) Gravity Feed System.
ii) Pressure or pump feed system.
I) GRAVITY FEED SYSTEM :
In this system, The fuel storage tank is placed at a higher level than the engine so that the fuel flows to the engine under gravitational force. In this case, no pump is required. This system is employed in motor cycles, scooters, mopeds and stationary engines.
II) PRESSURE OR PUMP FEED SYSTEM :
In this system, the fuel from the storage tank is forced into the engine by a fixed fuel pump. The fuel tank is kept away from the hot engine to avoid changes of catching fire. The fuel pump supplies fuel to the carburetor through a fuel filter. This filter removes the grid, dirt and any other foreign matter from the fuel. The Carburetor supplies air fuel mixture to the engine.
