Fuel Pump is used to pump the fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor. The most commonly used pump is a mechanical fuel pump of diaphragm.
It consists of a diaphragm , inlet and outlet pressure valves, rocker arm, pull rod, lever and return spring. The diaphragm is made of high-grade cotton impregnated with synthetic rubber. The Valves are non-return check valves and are made of Bakelite.
The diaphragm is operated mechanically by the cam and rocker arm. When the cam shaft rotates, the rocker arm is moved back and forth. When the cam pushes the rocker arm towards the body of the fuel pump, the fuel is sucked into the fuel pump through strainer and inlet valve. When the cam moves off, the return spring moves the rocker arm towards the camshaft. During this movement, the fuel is pushed up to the carburetor by closing the inlet valve and opening the outlet valve due to the fuel pressure itself. The suction and pumping effects are repeated continuously and the fuel is pumped to the carburetor from the tank.
