Liquid Petroleum Gas
Petroleum gas, obtained during cracking and fractional distillation, can be easily converted into liquid under high pressure as LPG. LPG is colorless and odorless gas. But during bottling some mercaptans is added, which produces bad odor, thereby any leakage of LPG from the cylinder can be detected instantaneously.
Natural Gas
Natural gas is found above the oil in oil well. It is a mixture of 50-90% methane and small amount of other hydrocarbons. Its calorific value ranges from 12000-14000 k.cal/m3. Natural gases are of two types.
1.Dry gas : If the natural gas contains lower hydrocarbons like methane and ethane, it is called by dry gas.
2.Wet gas : If the natural gas contains higher hydrocarbons like propane, butane, along with methane it is called wet gas.
Occurance
Like petroleum oil, natural gas is also formed by the decomposition of dead animals and plants, that were buried under lake and ocean, at high temperature and pressure for millions of years.
